Named
for Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence
-who reportedly never lived in Brooklyn-Carroll Gardens
shares its northern boundary with Cobble Hill at Degraw
and Boerum Hill at Warren, while extending south to Hamilton
Avenue and Red Hook. This long standing Italian neighborhood
of family-run stores is now sprinkled with chic cafes,
boutiques and antique shops. Here you'll find old timers
hovering over a game of bocci in Carroll Park, while pre-schoolers
as well as teenagers take advantage of the ample playground
equipment and newly renovated basketball courts. Especially
attractive are Carroll Garden's great schools, both public
and private. Look for those magnificent brownstones on
1st Place and beyond, with their generous streetside front
gardens which give the neighborhood its name. Only a short
subway ride from Manhattan, Carroll Gardens is one of Brooklyn's
finest residential treasures.
Columbia
Street Waterfront District
And
not to forget the distinct neighborhood of Columbia Street
Water Front District which extends from
Atlantic Avenue to Hamilton Avenue, a block or so west
of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Once a bustling district
of waterfront establishments, Columbia Street is rapidly
undergoing a revival, a pocket of restaurants, bakeries
and bistros doing quite nicely just off Degraw Street.
Not to mention lots of (not so) wild talk of pier renovation
which might include a cruise ship terminal. Around the
corner on Union Street you'll find a vibrant Brooklyn
- where it's been, and where it's heading - newer shops
side by side with century old businesses, many run by
second and third generation family members. If you're
lucky you'll also run into Sal, the Mayor of Sackett
Street, who will be happy to answer your historical questions.

About
Our Maps & Streets
Our
maps and scrollable streets are not drawn to scale. Our
maps are meant to convey a sense of what you'll find
when you walk the neighborhoods. Since our web space
is limited, we have adopted the following conventions. "Apartments" indicates
a multifamily building or buildings, generally without
a stoop.
"Residences" are buildings with stoops and
may be multifamily. "Residence" (singular)
is a single building.
"Residences" (plural) may indicate two our
three attached buildings.Storefront note:
Wherever storefronts (yellow) are indicated, they
are most likely to be three or four story brick
buildings with apartments above. A vacant storefront
in no way indicates that the entire building is
vacant.
